HANDHELD NEWS – According to iFixit, the chances of receiving more official Steam Deck LCD batteries are becoming increasingly slim because Valve has begun discontinuing the replacement part. The news has alarmed owners who fear that losing access to reliable battery replacements could eventually shorten the usable life of the handheld PC.
Valve is currently reshaping its hardware lineup, and one of those changes may directly affect how long the Steam Deck remains usable. The company has spent 2026 producing and shipping Steam Controller and Steam Machine units while also introducing major changes to the Steam Deck, including a substantial price increase. It now appears that those decisions extend beyond pricing. Valve is reportedly beginning to withdraw one of the most important components required to keep an aging device operational: the battery.
The issue became public after Reddit user Zok-Felswyn began searching for a replacement battery for a Steam Deck LCD. His device is not in urgent need of repair, since the battery still retains 68% of its original capacity and shows no signs of swelling. Even so, he contacted iFixit, which supplies replacement components for electronic devices, to understand what options might remain available in the future. The response he later shared on Reddit indicated that the battery was out of stock and was unlikely to return anytime soon.
“It turns out we have no immediate plans to restock this product. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” the company explained. “At this time, it appears increasingly unlikely that we will receive more batteries for the Steam Deck LCD, and we are actively evaluating aftermarket options. Unfortunately, we do not have a confirmed timeline for when batteries or aftermarket stock will become available.”
The reply worried Zok-Felswyn because he believes it may indicate broader changes to the availability of official Steam Deck replacement parts. Such a shift could eventually affect both the repairability and long-term lifespan of the device. “Obviously, my situation isn’t critical; I don’t have a swollen battery, an extremely low battery percentage, or any issues holding a charge. I just wanted to clarify things with iFixit for future reference and explore other options, if any. For now, things aren’t looking good, and I wanted to share this with others.”
Valve Made the Decision to Discontinue the Batteries
The disappearance of Steam Deck LCD batteries from iFixit was not the repair company’s own decision. After Zok-Felswyn’s post attracted significant attention on Reddit, an iFixit representative entered the discussion to explain what had happened. “It’s not that we decided to stop stocking these items. Unfortunately, Valve is starting to discontinue these parts. We’re looking for alternatives!”
Several users responded by raising concerns about a future in which some Steam Deck systems could become difficult or impossible to repair because replacement components are no longer available. “Is Valve discontinuing parts just as the devices start needing them? It really makes me hesitant to buy any of their new gadgets…” wrote DerpyMcDerpFaceII. MistSecurity expressed a similar concern: “This is exactly my problem with these kinds of programs. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great that there was stock for 4 years, but now we’re at a point where more people probably want to replace their worn-out batteries and there are no official options.” Valve has not yet issued a statement explaining its plans for Steam Deck LCD batteries, leaving the future availability of replacement parts uncertain.
