Britain’s New Darling Takes On A Major Jane Austen Challenge

MOVIE NEWS – You can never really get tired of Jane Austen, and the proof is clear: beyond dozens of classic and respectful film and TV adaptations, her works have also inspired a successful teen comedy (the Clueless, built on motifs from Emma) as well as a zombie comedy (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) – and of course Bridget Jones’s Diary.

It’s a proud tradition in the British film industry that newly discovered talents often get the opportunity to prove themselves in an Austen adaptation sooner or later. Kate Winslet earned an Oscar nomination for Sense and Sensibility (1996), Keira Knightley for Pride and Prejudice (2005), and Anya Taylor-Joy received, among other honors, a Golden Globe nomination for Emma. (2020). There was also an Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow (1996), which even won an Oscar for its score.

As the years fly by, the moment has arrived for another rising star to shine in a new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. Daisy Edgar-Jones began with TV series (Normal People, War of the Worlds), then moved to the big screen with Where the Crawdads Sing and Twisters.

For the classically trained 27-year-old actress, it seems Elinor Dashwood is the one role still missing for the real breakout moment in this latest Sense and Sensibility – because when someone truly excels as an Austen heroine, every door can open.
