MOVIE NEWS – Marvel Studios unveiled a new Avengers: Doomsday</i trailer at D23, putting Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom more prominently in the spotlight than ever before. The dark footage teases a massive conflict bringing together multiple teams from across the MCU, while also revealing Doom’s extraordinary magical power and an army of Sentinels under his command.

It is difficult to argue against Avengers: Doomsday being one of the biggest superhero movie events in recent memory. Its enormous cast would be enough to generate extraordinary attention on its own, but Marvel has also brought back one of the MCU’s most recognizable stars, Robert Downey Jr., not as Tony Stark but as Victor von Doom. At the same time, the Multiverse Saga carries a considerable amount of narrative baggage, leaving the movie with the difficult task of bringing together years of storylines while potentially establishing a new direction for the entire cinematic universe.

Marvel Studios used D23 2026 to reveal a brand-new special look at the threat awaiting its heroes. Sue Storm, played by Vanessa Kirby, narrates the ominous footage, which portrays Doctor Doom as a broken man who has transformed himself into a being powerful enough to confront the Avengers and their allies. One of the trailer’s most striking moments sees Doom seize control of an entire army of Sentinels before sending the mutant-hunting machines directly toward his enemies.

The Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four All Stand in Doctor Doom’s Way

Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will not be facing a single superhero team in Avengers: Doomsday. The Avengers, New Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and other heroes are all involved in the conflict, although previous footage has suggested that these groups may initially find themselves fighting one another. The catastrophic incursions threatening their respective universes appear likely to be responsible for much of that conflict, with entire worlds facing destruction as realities collide. Doom, meanwhile, commands magical power unlike almost anything Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have previously faced, and he appears determined to seize control of a multiverse already on the brink of total collapse.

The movie also marks Anthony and Joe Russo’s return to the MCU. The directing duo previously delivered one of Marvel’s largest theatrical releases with Avengers: Endgame, and although they were not responsible for steering the Multiverse Saga creatively over the years that followed, Avengers: Doomsday is positioned both as a successor to Endgame and as a culmination of the Marvel movies and series released since then. Marvel is clearly drawing heavily on some of the MCU’s most recognizable performers to connect those different eras and storylines.

One of the clearest examples is the return of Steve Rogers. Chris Evans will once again play the character, although Steve is no longer Captain America, and he is nevertheless expected to have a significant role in the new Avengers movie. His comeback has already become a major subject of debate among fans, but Marvel Studios is plainly banking on Robert Downey Jr., Evans, and numerous other iconic MCU performers as it prepares what may become its biggest multiversal event yet. Avengers: Doomsday opens in U.S. theaters on December 18, 2026.
