Insomniac Games’ next title, which will almost certainly not be available on PC, though Disney may have a say in this, will not feature any additional playable characters.
Following the latest trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, Insomniac revealed new details about various aspects of the game. As well as information about the technical side of the game, the development team also revealed more about the gameplay. According to Insomniac, there will be only one playable character in Marvel’s Wolverine: Logan. Mike Fitzgerald, the technology director, told GamesRadar that Logan will be the only playable character.
Many fans had previously believed that characters such as Jean Grey would be playable, but Insomniac confirmed that while these characters will team up with Logan, they will remain non-playable characters, or NPCs, throughout the story. Insomniac’s goal was to focus as much as possible on Wolverine. As a result, the team has created a tightly controlled action game that showcases many facets of the character.
Fans can still expect to see many familiar faces throughout Marvel’s Wolverine, particularly if they are well acquainted with the X-Men universe and its many iconic characters. However, compared to their appearances in Marvel’s Spider-Man, the big difference is that these characters won’t be playable, even though a playable Jean Grey seems far more interesting than a playable Mary Jane.
This could, of course, change later on. We wouldn’t be surprised if, after the game inevitably sells millions of copies in no time, Insomniac Games were to announce that this will change. However, the studio will monetize this, meaning there will be some kind of story DLC that will allow us to control characters other than Logan. Perhaps we’re being too pessimistic, but it’s not impossible that this could happen.
Marvel’s Wolverine will be released on September 15 for PlayStation 5.
