Netflix Lands the Zelda Movie: Sony Deal Secures Streaming Premiere After Theatrical Run

MOVIE NEWS – A multi-million-dollar NetflixSony agreement has given The Legend of Zelda movie (and other titles) a clear landing spot once it leaves theaters. Netflix and Sony Pictures have reached a deal that will bring the Zelda film – along with more releases – to the streaming platform after its theatrical window. With this move, Netflix has secured the streaming premiere of the live-action The Legend of Zelda film once its big-screen run is over.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about The Legend of Zelda movie, but as the months pass, its commercial trajectory is coming into much sharper focus. What’s already confirmed is the theatrical release date: May 7, 2026. While Nintendo and Sony Pictures continue moving forward with the live-action adaptation, Netflix has already positioned itself to capture the wave of interest that typically follows a major theatrical release.

In case it needs a refresher: while Nintendo is in charge of production and the creative direction (alongside Arad Productions and Oddball Entertainment), Sony Pictures is partly responsible for financing and global distribution. With that structure in place, it has now been confirmed that Netflix has obtained the film’s streaming rights through a global pay-TV style agreement with Sony Pictures, following a reported $7 billion investment commitment. In practical terms, after the theatrical release and the home release window (digital purchase/rental plus physical editions), Netflix will be the first subscription streaming service to offer The Legend of Zelda movie. The agreement also covers additional catalog films and upcoming Sony releases, with a gradual rollout and full worldwide availability expected by early 2029. As a result, The Legend of Zelda movie and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse should land on Netflix a few months after their 2027 theatrical releases. If you’re not a fan of the theater experience, the most straightforward option may simply be waiting until they appear in Netflix’s extensive catalog. As for the Nintendo production itself, more details are still pending, but we do know Shigeru Miyamoto is attached as a creative producer to help ensure the adaptation stays faithful, alongside Avi Arad, with director Wes Ball – known for the Maze Runner trilogy and other films – overseeing the project.
