Red Dead Redemption 2 spent 2025 racking up massive download numbers on PS4, proving yet again how untouchable it still is. With a proper “next-gen” update, the game could hit even harder on modern hardware. After a year like this, it’s hard not to ask why there’s still no real PS5 and Xbox Series X|S patch.
Some games only get better with age, and one of the industry’s enduring masterpieces will always be Red Dead Redemption 2. More than seven years after launch, Rockstar Games’ open-world western is once again showing why it remains essential for millions of players. Even without a current-gen console upgrade or a Nintendo Switch version, Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to post unstoppable sales momentum.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Sweeps PS4
According to RockstarINTEL, Red Dead Redemption 2 was the most downloaded PS4 game across the US/Canada region and Europe throughout 2025, as outlined in a recent PlayStation Blog post. It took the top spot in 10 out of 12 months in the US, and its European performance tracked very similarly for most of the year, beating out heavyweights like GTA 5, Minecraft, and EA Sports FC 25/26.
The wildest part is that Red Dead Redemption 2 still hasn’t received a proper update for the current console generation (PS5, Xbox Series X|S). Fans have been asking for years to play RDR 2 at 60 fps, and now that the Nintendo Switch 2 is on the market, there are also players who want the western on Nintendo’s hybrid hardware. It’s obvious Rockstar is buried in GTA 6, but just a few months ago the studio still managed to surprise everyone by bringing back the original Red Dead.
Late last year, Rockstar Games re-released the first Red Dead Redemption and its expansion for current platforms, and even pushed it onto mobile devices. A native version landed on December 2 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, and it also showed up on Android and iOS via Netflix’s game catalog. So when does something similar happen for Red Dead Redemption 2? If you ask the players, Rockstar is overdue, but there’s still hope for a polished version down the line.
And it’s worth remembering that Red Dead Redemption 2 is the fourth best-selling game of all time (79 million copies), already closing in on Wii Sports (82.9 million). It’s entirely plausible that, within a few months, it could climb into third place with more than 83 million units sold. If Rockstar ever ships RDR 2 again on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 with meaningful enhancements, it could very realistically push past 90 million copies.
