This Steam Hit Is Cheap for Now, but a Price Increase Is Coming – and Baldur’s Gate 3 Entered the Conversation

“I didn’t like what Baldur’s Gate 3 did,” said Thomas Mahler, head of Moon Studios, explaining the situation on social media. The trending RPG currently surging on Steam is set to cost more, but the reason behind the decision is less alarming than it may initially sound.

The game has effectively climbed from obscurity to become one of the most actively played titles on Steam. The latest update for No Rest for the Wicked, which arrived alongside a major price reduction, boosted concurrent player numbers by as much as 1,277 percent. This sudden wave of interest pushed the title into the top sellers on Valve’s platform and prompted its director to issue a warning to the community. Anyone considering jumping in may want to act sooner rather than later. The plan is for the game not to return to such a low price point for a long time.

The Trending RPG Confirms a Price Increase

Thomas Mahler of Moon Studios reminded players that the game will become more expensive once early access ends. “I’m not trying to create FOMO, but when version 1.0 of No Rest for the Wicked launches, it will cost €60 because it’s a premium title. We communicated this a long time ago and have repeated it several times,” he wrote on his personal social channels. This is not new information, as the Steam page has stated since release that early access would come with a discount followed by a price increase.

Mahler also outlined the reasoning behind that approach. “We launched at €40 because players who support early access deserve a discount. Baldur’s Gate 3 entered early access at full price, and I was never comfortable with that idea. If you back a game early, you should receive something extra,” he said. While this model is becoming more common across the industry, it is not without risk from a developer perspective. Lower initial revenue combined with a later price hike can lead to negative reactions.

What does create a sense of urgency is the limited nature of the current promotion. The game is discounted by 40 percent, dropping the price to €23.99, and according to the director, this is a one-time offer. “I’m sharing this so no one is surprised or frustrated later. If you’ve been unsure about Wicked, the current price really is a good moment to jump in. That’s it, just transparency,” he concluded. Console players, who do not have access to early access, appear to be missing the chance to buy the game at this reduced price.
