Netflix’s Surprise Danish Spy Thriller Is Officially Coming Back for Season 2

MOVIE NEWS – One of Netflix’s unexpected breakout hits of 2025 is officially returning for a second season. The streamer releases no shortage of spy action, but one Danish thriller stood out as the ideal binge-watch and has now been rewarded with another run of episodes.

Netflix has confirmed that the Danish crime series The Asset has been renewed for Season 2 after the show premiered last October. Returning cast members include Clara Dessau (Baby Fever), Maria Cordsen (Fredløs), Afshin Firouzi (Boundless), and Nicolas Bro (War Horse). The story tracks a young agent who works her way into Denmark’s biggest cocaine dealer’s orbit by getting close to his wife. As the danger ramps up, the police cadet risks everything, including her assignment, to protect her informant friend. To mark the announcement, conceptual director Samanou Acheche Sahlstrøm shared the following:

“It’s truly heartwarming to see how well The Asset has been received. We’re thrilled for the opportunity to dive deeper into each character and unfold their stories for our viewers. This second season turns everything upside down as Tea and Ashley’s worlds collide once again and new challenges push them to their breaking point.”

The Asset Season 2 does not currently have a release date, but production is set to start in Copenhagen in 2026. The next season of the series is set to be directed by Samanou Acheche Sahlstrøm (Until We Fall), while also serving as a head writer alongside Frederik Ringtved. Kasper Barfoed (The Nurse), who helped helm the first six-episode season, was not listed in today’s announcement for Season 2. The rest of the writing team features Johanne Algren, Oscar Giese, and Christian Bengtson. Read the official plot synopsis for The Asset:

When a washed-out police cadet gets one last chance at joining the force, she throws everything she has into a risky undercover operation. Posing as a luxury jeweler, she befriends the seemingly shallow and materialistic girlfriend of Denmark’s biggest cocaine dealer in order to gather information on his national operation. After witnessing the danger her unwitting informant and her informant’s daughter are in, the cadet risks her mission – and her future as an officer – to help her vulnerable new friend.

What Did Critics Say About The Asset?

The Asset currently holds a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on eight reviews. While it has its weaknesses, the series was praised for its performances, particularly by Clara Dessau. Espinof’s review stated that the series may not be a standout in the genre, but is “still capable of delivering adrenaline, moral dilemmas, and a brutal portrayal of loneliness.” Meanwhile, LeisureByte.com concluded that the series leaned on the personal story rather than the action, saying that it was an “enjoyable watch that focuses a bit more on emotions than the thrill.” The Asset doesn’t reinvent spy thrillers, but it proved to be a worthy watch for most critics.

Of course, some reviews were less enthused about The Asset, despite its potential. Digital Mafia Talkies was especially disappointed in the lack of thrills, stating: “[If] you are claiming you have action, crime, suspense, and thrill in store for me, you better deliver on that promise or hire better marketing experts.” Movies and Munchies felt the same way, pointing out how The Asset fails to provide any surprises for fans of the genre. “This draws too heavily on other crime thrillers and the predictability removes any intrigue, which greatly diminishes the thrills, boiling this down to a forgettable and run-of-the-mill story that progressively reduces engagement the longer it goes on.”
