The 2020 console is also approaching a significant sales milestone, and Sony has published its latest sales figures.
As of December 31, Sony had shipped 92.2 million PlayStation 5 consoles to stores. Unfortunately, there is no breakdown of how many of these are PlayStation 5 Pro units. In the last quarter of 2024, this figure was 8 million, which seems like a lot on paper. However, when put into context, the result is disappointing. Between October and December of that year, the figure was 9.5 million. This decline cannot be attributed to the fact that many players already own a PlayStation 5; rather, it is due to Sony’s failure to reduce the price of the PlayStation 5 since its launch in 2020 and its decision to raise the price last year.
Sony does not disclose the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers, so we don’t know how many people are paying almost nothing for PlayStation Plus Premium because one retro game per month is the bare minimum. Sony only says how many monthly active users the PlayStation Network has. The latest figure is 132 million, 3 million more than a year ago. That doesn’t seem impressive either.
In the last three months of the previous year, 97.2 million PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 games were sold, 1.3 million more than at the end of 2024. Of those, 13.2 million were first-party games, 1.6 million more than a year earlier. Seventy-six percent of sales were digital, i.e., through the PlayStation Network, which is a 2% increase from the last three months of 2024.
In 2025, Sony did not release many first-party games. This seems to be changing this year. This will be necessary for the PlayStation 5 to achieve strong results, but the price increase will make selling the consoles more difficult. The console should have been through at least two price reductions by now.
