TECH NEWS – The code name is not final, and the hype surrounding it reportedly will not be as successful as OpenAI had hoped.
At this year’s World Economic Forum Axios House Davos event, OpenAI representative Lehane revealed that the startup’s first consumer AI device is one of their top priorities, and they plan to launch it in the second half of 2026. Subsequently, the Economic Daily News of Taiwan noted that OpenAI will likely launch the device in September and expects to sell 40 to 50 million units in the first year. The publication added that Foxconn will likely manufacture the device in Vietnam. OpenAI is reportedly working on special AI-powered earbuds with the internal code name Sweetpea. The earbuds would rely heavily on cloud-based AI processing and feature a 2nm Samsung Exynos chip for on-device processing.

However, Smart Pikachu, a well-known insider, has noted that, according to a recently filed OpenAI patent, the upcoming earbuds will be available under the name Dime. The initial version of Dime will consist of basic headphones, and the release of earbuds with computing power comparable to a smartphone has been postponed. The continuous rise in memory prices has made the bill of materials (BOM) for the device’s 2-nm chip quite expensive, which played an important role in changing OpenAI‘s calculations for the device.
OpenAI is also developing another consumer device that is said to be pen-shaped and similar in size to the Apple iPod Shuffle. The device’s internal code name is Gumdrop, and it lacks a dedicated screen entirely. It is context sensitive thanks to a series of sensors, including cameras and microphones. The device can run OpenAI‘s customized AI models locally and has cloud-based computing support for tasks requiring greater computing power. It can convert handwritten notes into text and instantly upload them to ChatGPT. Similar to how we currently communicate with our smartphones, the device will be able to communicate with its peers. While it will not be wearable, it will be pocket-sized or wearable around the neck. The device is expected to be available to the public this year or next.
However, given the disappointing performance of the first Dime version, significant delays for Gumdrop are possible.
