Not long after RE Requiem hit, Capcom made an odd move that strongly hints at what the next remake could be. The publisher has submitted a Resident Evil 5 remaster to the ESRB.
It’s been close to three years since the last Resident Evil release, which was the remake of the fourth entry. In a few weeks, fans will be able to dig into Resident Evil: Requiem. But everyone knows Capcom isn’t done squeezing its remake machine. The Japanese publisher rarely spells out its roadmap in advance. That’s why ratings boards often end up being the clearest window into what might be coming next.
A Resident Evil 5 Remake?
A few hours ago, it was spotted that Capcom has registered a new Resident Evil 5 version for Xbox Series X/S with the ESRB. Many are reading this as the kind of early signal that usually comes before a remake announcement, though it could also just point to a straightforward remaster or re-release. One curious detail in the rating entry is the presence of “in-game purchases”, a label that didn’t appear on the PS4 and Xbox One ports.
The ESRB listing mentions only Xbox Series X/S and says nothing about PlayStation 5, which has fueled speculation about a possible timed exclusive – or, more simply, a rating that arrives before a wider multiplatform rollout. It’s worth noting that Resident Evil 5 is already playable on Xbox Series X/S via backward compatibility, but there still isn’t a native current-gen version optimized for the hardware (via Kotaku).
For context, Resident Evil 4 Remake was revealed during a State of Play in June 2022, and there’s also a PlayStation event scheduled for this Thursday, February 12. And we shouldn’t ignore that Eva La Dare, the voice actress for Sheva Alomar – Resident Evil 5’s co-protagonist – has teased news for the franchise’s 30th anniversary: “Stay tuned! I have some fun things planned for March,” she said, alongside the hashtags “Resident Evil 5”, “Sheva Alomar”, and “RE5”.
