A developer’s portfolio from another studio has been leaked. While the project may still be in development, it’s likely that it won’t be anymore.

CD Projekt RED (CDPR) is reportedly collaborating with WayForward, the developer of the Shantae series, on a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners project codenamed “Gemini.” MP1st discovered this information in the portfolio of a former WayForward developer who listed the project as being developed for 2025–2026. Of course, it’s impossible to know whether the concept was further developed or scrapped, as often happens at game studios. However, the available details suggest a “rollback-based” 2.5D beat ’em up, which would fit well with the style of the Edgerunners anime. Thanks to the River City Girls series, WayForward already has experience with this genre.

Regardless of this project’s status, it’s interesting that CDPR was considering investing in Edgerunners. On the other hand, the overwhelmingly positive reception of the anime series on Netflix certainly didn’t leave the Polish studio indifferent. As you may recall, this was one of the main factors that contributed to the revival of Cyberpunk 2077 following its troubled launch.

When CDPR announced to fans that there would be no second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the unbridled enthusiasm subsided somewhat. However, the Polish developer eventually announced Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, a 10-episode standalone sequel featuring an entirely new story and cast of characters. Instead of following the story of young mercenaries’ rise to prominence, the plot delves into themes of family, obsession, legacy, and the media frenzy in Night City. The main storyline follows two intertwining narratives: “The Fall of a Legend” (a former top-tier edgerunner who has been stripped of his cyberimplants and must survive in Night City without them) and “A Nomad’s Revenge” (a netrunner from Snake Nation who seeks revenge for his destroyed clan and stumbles upon dangerous corporate secrets).

Cyberpunk 2077 recently surpassed 40 million copies sold, placing it among the top 20 best-selling games of all time. CDPR is already hard at work on the sequel, codenamed Orion, though it may be several years before its release.
