PlayStation 6: Not Taking Advantage of AMD’s Latest Technology?

In terms of architecture, Sony‘s next console (which the company still has not officially announced) could be slightly behind, according to a reliable source.

Fresh information has surfaced about expectations for the internal hardware of the next Sony PlayStation. Do not expect the next PlayStation console to rely exclusively on AMD‘s upcoming RDNA 5 GPU architecture. During a recent discussion on the NeoGAF forums, the trusted tech insider Kepler_L2 noted that the PlayStation 5‘s internals are effectively a hybrid of RDNA 1 and ray tracing, and that the PlayStation 6 will not be built entirely around RDNA 5, either.

In another recent post, the insider claimed that the PlayStation 6 could come with up to 30 GB of GDDR7 memory. The often-rumored next generation Sony handheld (with rumors suggesting Sony could return to this space after the PSP and PlayStation Vita) could feature up to 24 GB of LPDDR5X. If that is accurate, it would put it on par, memory-wise, with the recently released Asus ROG Xbox Ally X. Rumor has it the handheld will be dockable. It is also expected to run PlayStation 5 games, but it is not expected to be as powerful as the current PlayStation 5. Either way, do not expect the next PlayStation hardware to hit the market before 2027.

Speaking of next generation hardware expectations, AMD recently said it is preparing to support a next generation Xbox launch in 2027. However, Microsoft has since stated that it has not committed to an exact release date for its next hardware family.

A delay seems likely. AI has already reached the point where GPU schedules are slipping, and 2027 looks like a realistic window not only for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5000 Super family, but also for AMD‘s RDNA 5-based graphics cards. Every component is getting more expensive, and yes, that applies to consoles too. Are manufacturers waiting so prices do not become completely unaffordable? Odds are, yes.
