A strange rumor has surfaced, but given what’s happening around the French publisher, we can’t help but believe it.
Last month, rumors circulated that the Watch Dogs franchise would be put on hold. Renowned informant Shinobi602 responded that this was not the case. There was a lot of speculation about what he meant, but the answer may be anticlimactic. According to Tom Henderson, the editor-in-chief of Insider Gaming, there are plans for a director’s cut of Watch Dogs Legion, a kind of remaster.
“I’ve now found out that there is some work being done on the Watch Dogs franchise related to Watch Dogs Legion. It’s almost like a director’s cut. I don’t know why they’re doing it. There’s going to be some new content in it. I’ve heard they might release a version of the game with a fully night-time mode or something like that. This is what I’ve heard – don’t shoot the messenger! They’re doing new motion capture for it. I think this is kind of Ubisoft‘s new thing: trying to do director’s cuts and new versions of games they’ve already released. It’s like remasters in a sense, right? They’re just doing the low-hanging fruit until they get things together with the rest of the company,” Henderson explained on the Insider Gaming podcast.
Ubisoft recently canceled six games and is reportedly struggling with a talent drain due to the constant release of sequels. Understandably, many people don’t understand why Ubisoft is remastering the worst game in the series instead of the first two games. The director’s cut will likely be released at the same time as the upcoming film adaptation. Ubisoft chose the latest installment because it requires the least amount of work to update, even though Legion is hardly the best representative of the franchise.
As for when we can expect Ubisoft to start revealing these games, Insider Gaming executive editor Mike Straw predicts that we’ll hear more before the May investor meeting. That’s when they’ll release the latest information, as they must provide their annual forecast for fiscal year 2027.
