More and more details are leaking out about the game announced several years ago, so Ubisoft will likely share more information about it soon.
Assassin’s Creed Hexe reportedly follows Ella, a new character, amid the German witch trials of the 16th century. Ella is persecuted for her supernatural powers and becomes involved in the affairs of the Assassins. Interestingly, this may overlap with the adventures of the franchise’s iconic character, Ezio Auditore, who was active in the early 1500s. According to Insider Gaming editor-in-chief Tom Henderson, this was exactly Ubisoft‘s intention. Hexe may also overlap with Shadows, which depicted Ezio’s battles against the Templars in Italy.
“I know that people are kind of put off by the fact that it’s a witch game. That is kind of the case to a certain degree. But then Ezio comes in – or was planned to come in – halfway through the game and teaches Ella the ways of the Assassins. Then it probably leans more into a traditional Assassin’s Creed title,” Henderson explained on the Insider Gaming podcast.
It is unclear whether Ubisoft still wants to bring Ezio back, especially after creative director Clint Hocking left in February. However, it would certainly make sense for him to return. Ubisoft is no stranger to bringing back old assassins. Kassandra has appeared on numerous occasions, as has Altair. Active in the early 1500s, Ezio served as Grand Master of the Roman Order. He returned to Rome in 1512 to settle down with Maria, resigning from the Brotherhood and naming Lodovico Ariosoto as his successor. However, he remained closely connected to the Order and continued to mentor new apprentices. This is consistent with what Henderson said about Hexe.
However, Ezio died in 1524, and the witch trials of the Holy Roman Empire did not reach their peak until the 1560s. Therefore, everything depends on exactly when Hexe takes place. If Ezio appears, don’t expect him to be the legendary assassin he once was because he would be a retired old man by then. According to Henderson, the release of Hexe has been postponed until 2027. Therefore, we will have to wait a while longer for official details about the game, especially since the Black Flag remake and the multiplayer spin-off Invictus are reportedly coming out first in the Assassin’s Creed franchise.
