Inspired by Command & Conquer: Renegade, the long-awaited Renegade X version 1.0 is finally here.
In 2007, a group of modders announced their intention to create a sequel to Electronic Arts‘ ambitious yet unsuccessful first-person shooter, Command & Conquer: Renegade. Created in response to the cancellation of Renegade 2, Renegade X aimed to accomplish what EA failed to do with Unreal Engine 3 technology. Nearly 20 years later, Renegade X is finally complete. It has been available in beta since 2014. After more than a decade of testing, developer Totem Arts finalized version 1.0 this week and announced the game’s release on its forums.
The full version of Renegade X features large-scale, team-based battles on over 30 maps with various vehicles, including tanks, aircraft, and destructive superweapons such as orbital cannons and nuclear strikes. The 1.0 update primarily focuses on bug fixes and improving game balance. However, there is also a significant new feature: a new map called C&C City. It is Totem Arts‘ long-awaited adaptation of the original Renegade‘s C&C-City map and the last feature from the original game that Renegade X has not yet adopted.
To celebrate version 1.0, a new trailer has been released that showcases the scale and spectacle of Renegade X battles. It’s worth noting that Renegade X‘s multiplayer mode has full online functionality and extensive bot support. There’s also a single-player campaign called Black Dawn that was released in 2012. However, it’s likely that the multiplayer mode has been significantly refined since then.
Renegade X is available for download on the Totem Arts website. Although the spiritual successor to the original Renegade is finally complete, Totem Arts is not done yet. The studio is also working on Firestorm, a first-person reimagining of Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun. According to Totem Arts, Firestorm is more ambitious than Renegade X, featuring more destructive superweapons and a unique multiplayer mode.
