Capcom’s 2026 Is Going to Be Historic – And There’s Finally Good News About Their Other Big Game

Although Capcom has already launched its big game of 2026, it’s not the only project the Japanese giant has on the horizon. The company also released Monster Hunter Stories 3 in the first quarter, and the future will be defined by Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which marks the series’ enormous comeback with a brand-new original game after more than ten years of absence.

However, for those who may have thought that the recent silence surrounding the project could indicate development problems, Satoru Nihei, the game’s director, has confirmed that the team is already in the final stages of production. Nihei himself shared a message on social media in which he thanked players for the positive reaction to the trailer shown in recent months. At the same time, the creative director partially broke the silence that had surrounded the project for some time. According to him, the community’s enthusiasm for learning more about the game is evident, but the studio is currently focused on finalizing the last details of development before making the next official announcement.

“The entire team is working on the final stages of development. Stay tuned for our next announcement!” the Japanese creator added. With much of the project’s information already on the table, the big question now is what that next announcement will be. Everything points to it finally being the release date. For now, the studio has only confirmed that Way of the Sword will arrive sometime in 2026, though no specific date has been given.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword Is Not a Horror Game, but That Doesn’t Mean It Won’t Be Unsettling

In addition to discussing the state of development, the director also took the opportunity to share new details about one of the game’s settings: the Underground Laboratory, a facility located beneath the city of Kyoto. This is where the enemy known as Dokyo works, creating new Genma — the demonic creatures the protagonist will have to face throughout the adventure. According to Nihei, this level has been designed with the aesthetic of a traditional Japanese haunted house. The shadows cast on the shoji panels and the dim lighting aim to create an unsettling atmosphere that contrasts with the dynamism of the action. All of this is part of the setting of the new Onimusha, which will combine intense combat with personality-filled environments within a fantastical version of Kyoto during the Edo period.
