In this case, we can truly say, “Better late than never,” since it’s been quite a while. Before Valve reinvented cooperative gaming with Left 4 Dead, there was Zombie Panic!. In the Zombie Panic! mod for the original Half-Life, groups of players battled a single player-controlled zombie.
This might not sound like much of a challenge, but survivors killed by the zombie would rise as zombies themselves, slowly turning the tables on the survivors until only one unfortunate person remained alive.
Zombie Panic! was released on ModDB in 2004. This was relatively late for an original Half-Life mod. It was soon followed by Zombie Panic! Source, an enhanced version of the concept built on the Half-Life 2 engine. Now, however, the original Zombie Panic! has finally joined its younger sibling on Valve‘s digital platform. The Zombie Panic Team (the creators of Zombie Panic! and its Source-based sequel) announced the mod’s arrival on Steam late last year, attributing the decision to the Half-Life 25th Anniversary update.
“Over the past few years, we’ve been hosting community game night events on the classic Half-Life 1 mod where it all began. As time passed and with the release of the HL 25th anniversary update in 2023, the ZP1 mod experienced more gameplay and technical issues, including constant crashes and other problems that ruined the experience for players. Recently, our lead programmer decided to improve things and update ZP1 to meet today’s standards. This includes quality-of-life changes and fully rewriting the source code to make it compatible with modern systems. We’ve been playtesting this new build closely with a few community veterans who have helped us shape the best version. We wanted to take it a step further, hoping more people would know about and play it. Therefore, after 20 years, we are thrilled to announce the official store page for Zombie Panic 1! It has all the features of the original GoldSrc mod, with the same gameplay feel and mechanics as the former team. It has full support for the Half-Life 25th anniversary update and prevents game crashes and compatibility issues with modern systems. We’ve implemented Steam Achievements and Steam Workshop support. The classic official maps have improved visuals and gameplay with new random item spawners. There are new first- and third-person animations, as well as new player models and weapons. There are new CVARs for players and server admins, as well as new mapping entities for better balance. A new fatigue system prevents unnecessary bunny hopping and removes the old ‘jump delay.’ There is a new zombie vision and a new ammo bank HUD to manage all your ammo. There are also new inventory icons and a bunch of new unique decals, textures, and sounds made by community members. The source code has been rewritten using ‘BugfixedHL’ as a base. As a bonus, we’ve uploaded the source code to GitHub, making the Zombie Panic 1 source code available,” the developers wrote on Steam.
The modders have also integrated the hardcore mode from Zombie Panic! Source, ramping up the tension with tougher zombies and time limits for completing objectives. According to the Zombie Panic Team, they may add more content in the future, though they aren’t making any concrete commitments. Zombie Panic is available for download on Steam, but you’ll need Half-Life to play it.
