Crimson Desert: Is Pearl Abyss Really Keeping Console Performance Under Wraps?

Is the studio following the example of Cyberpunk 2077 with its upcoming game, or is this all just a misunderstanding? A post on Reddit claimed that Pearl Abyss will not show base PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series footage from Crimson Desert before its release. The post cited Digital Foundry as the source, since they played the game on a PlayStation 5 Pro.

According to the poster, the day-one patch (which has become a standard feature for nearly every major game…) will deliver significant performance improvements on consoles. They then added that Digital Foundry wouldn’t be showing console footage, though the developers could have chosen to do so.

However, it turned out that this was misleading. Among the commenters, a moderator shared a Discord screenshot where a user asked John Linneman, an editor at Digital Foundry (and DF Retro), about this. The question was whether he would get pre-release access to Crimson Desert on his own console, or if he could test it running on a standard PlayStation 5 before launch. Linneman replied that he didn’t think there was much chance of that, as the problem lies with the activation server. Pearl Abyss hasn’t activated it yet, so the press doesn’t have much luck diving deeper into Crimson Desert either.

This, of course, remains extremely interesting. We’re talking, of course, about Pearl Abyss, who joined the ranks and confirmed the use of Denuvo DRM for PC players just a few days before launch (the older and/or weaker the processor, the more it hurts performance, and this shouldn’t go unmentioned, especially since this is, after all, a SINGLE-PLAYER title). And so Pearl Abyss essentially loaned Digital Foundry a PlayStation 5 Pro to run the game.

Crimson Desert launches on March 19 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
