The Elder Scrolls VI: Todd Howard Doesn’t Really Want to Talk About It!

In an interview, he joked that he doesn’t even know the game that was announced nearly eight years ago.

The Elder Scrolls VI was announced back in June 2018, and we still haven’t seen anything from the new entry in the series. The game has been in development for so long, and the wait is still expected to be so long, that even Todd Howard joked that he had never heard of it. Howard told IGN that he had never heard of it when he was asked about the game’s current status during a new interview focused on Starfield’s upcoming PlayStation 5 release.

At the beginning of the interview, Howard said we should pretend it hadn’t been announced and didn’t exist, which makes it clear that Bethesda Game Studios is still not ready to talk about the next entry in the series, and that the wait will probably continue for quite some time. Although Howard was initially reluctant to discuss The Elder Scrolls VI, he did eventually touch on the game when asked about the lessons learned from Starfield that had been carried over into the development of Bethesda’s next title.

“But the one thing I’d say is really in the tech as we’re going to Creation Engine 3. Again, the team has done a really incredible job at not just pushing what it is, but how it’s integrated into our development cycle. So, you don’t feel that what we’re doing on a day-to-day basis, like when the game goes down. So, we’re in a fortunate position where the builds of the game are really consistently working every day. Well, not every day, but we’ve had more days than we’ve ever had where the build is good, there’s new stuff in it, and we can play it. And when you’re making those kinds of technical changes as we talked about, often you’re pulling the rug out from under the team who’s making content. You don’t want to be like, ‘Okay, that doesn’t work for this period of time, you’re going to have to wait until we get that working again.’ And we’ve done a really good job of managing that on this game. And with Starfield, we struggled there for a number of years in terms of when we went through the engine change”, Howard said.

He highlighted an important point that will likely put The Elder Scrolls VI’s launch content in a better position than Starfield’s, where repetitive points of interest started to feel stale very quickly. Regardless of how development is progressing, The Elder Scrolls VI will face major challenges when it finally launches.

Since The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is such a massively popular game, the studio is in a no-win situation, according to former BGS lead artist Nate Purkeypile.
