Todd Howard Says Bringing Starfield to PS5 Was Always Part of the Plan

Almost three years after its launch and following more than a year of doubts and rumors about the future of Starfield, the game has unveiled two new additional content pieces and made its direction clear. However, what was said “would not be a timed exclusive” — as Aaron Greenberg, Xbox’s VP of game marketing at Microsoft, put it — is nevertheless arriving on PS5 next April. But for Todd Howard, the decision to bring the game to the competition’s console was always part of the plan.

As you may recall, Bethesda‘s space RPG initially debuted as an exclusive for the Xbox and PC ecosystem following Microsoft‘s acquisition of the company, a deal closed in 2021. Since then, rumors about its arrival on PS5 never stopped circulating, until it was finally confirmed that on April 7 it will arrive on Sony‘s console with the base game, the Shattered Space expansion, and the two contents announced this week: Terran Armada and Free Lanes — which has led many to dig through the archives.

For Todd Howard, Starfield on PS5 Was a Logical Decision Made Long Ago

However, Howard didn’t want to overthink it and made clear to IGN that he “always wanted” to bring Starfield to PlayStation, highlighting the historic relationship between Bethesda and Sony. In fact, the creative recalled that, even after the acquisition by Microsoft, the company continued working with Sony on titles like Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, reinforcing the idea that this version was part of the long-term plans.

“We always wanted to do it. People forget that, with Fallout 76 and its updates, and Skyrim, we were still working a lot in collaboration with PlayStation, even before Starfield came out on the platform. So we’re very excited to be able to reach a new audience,” the North American creative said.

This content push and expansion to PS5 arrives at a key moment for Starfield as it approaches its third year of life. Some criticism has pointed to the lack of depth in its world compared to other Bethesda titles, something that Shattered Space didn’t fully manage to reverse. With its arrival on PS5 and these new updates, Bethesda seeks to give its galactic RPG a second chance and prove that it still has a lot to offer to a new audience.
