No, this is not an April Fools’ Day joke. Vulkanic is genuinely making something like this, and Altera already looks like one of those games that mixes serious military sandbox ideas with a level of absurdity that is impossible to ignore.
Altera is a military survival sandbox where the goal is to become the ultimate troop commander and lead your faction to victory. The game promises a 64 km² world filled with diverse regions and unique landmarks, while more than 40 territories can be captured and controlled by competing factions. It is built around a persistent world with customizable rules, which means players will not only be able to talk to NPCs for quests and encounter dynamic world events, but also shape the overall experience to fit their preferred play style. Weapon modification, customization, advanced base building, crafting, and seamless switching between first-person and third-person perspectives are all part of the package.
The game also features a fully dynamic day and night cycle, a weather system, character creation, and character customization. Through faction management, players can upgrade infrastructure and assign missions to subordinates, while troop management allows them to recruit soldiers, equip them, and command them directly. A progression and skill development system is also included, along with solo play, co-op, and dedicated server hosting. Players will be able to choose between PvE, PvP, or a mixture of both, with server-specific rule sets. Soldiers can be stationed at bases, assigned different roles, sent to capture enemy territories, and used to defend your own holdings against incoming attacks.
Vulkanic recently reported on Steam that Altera has already attracted more than 2,000 applicants for upcoming playtests. Still, the part that immediately stands out is not the scale of the sandbox, but the presence of penguin soldiers. How exactly does a penguin become a soldier? According to the game’s own pitch, you strap a military helmet with a targeting device onto its head, aim through that device, and then the penguin shoots down anything in its way. It is the kind of idea that sounds completely ridiculous on paper and yet somehow becomes instantly memorable because of it.
Development on Altera began in 2022, and the project originally leaned much more heavily into science fiction. In its earlier concept, humans, animals, and robots fought together against an evil force called Metalgrave. Over time, however, Vulkanic pushed the game toward a more realistic direction, moving many of the sci-fi elements into the background. One piece of that earlier vision remained in place: the idea of humans fighting alongside animals. That is why the penguin soldiers are still here. Access to the Altera beta can still be requested on Steam, but there is currently no release date, and the game will first launch in Early Access.
