Yet another franchise that Electronic Arts has neglected lately. Who knows how successful it could have been with more support?
Developed by DICE (yes, the same DICE currently working on Battlefield!), the game was released for PS3 and Xbox 360 in November 2008, followed by a PC port in January 2009. It was a first-person, action-adventure, platformer game that could essentially be described as a parkour game. Faith Connors’s story was great, but it ultimately didn’t get a sequel; just a prequel for mobile in 2010 and a reboot, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, which came out in 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. This game was also developed by DICE.
A prototype of the game was leaked in 2019 with a date of February 7, 2008, meaning this build was created nine months before the game’s release. We can observe a few things. The menu design and title track are different. The intro monologue has been cut, and the opening sequence is slightly longer because there’s a part where Faith examines herself. Compared to the final version, it’s less colorful, and it lacks polish. The retail version reveals less of what’s happening, so Faith speaks more in this build.
The final part of the first mission is longer. Faith must make her way to the edge of the building, realize there’s no way out, and hide for a while until the helicopter arrives. This part was shortened in the final version because the helicopter appears the moment Faith arrives. Perhaps DICE and Electronic Arts made this change because they thought players might carelessly jump to their deaths. Additionally, this version contains assets intended for a cut multiplayer mode called Cops & Runners, which is Mirror’s Edge’s version of Cops & Robbers. We can see these assets at the end of the video.
You can find the build on Hidden Palace and download it along with the modified RPCS3 emulator, since the standard version won’t run the prototype.
