One Version Of The Outer Worlds Is Disappearing From Stores, But Obsidian Is Giving Fans A Free Upgrade

Obsidian has announced that it will remove the base version of the first The Outer Worlds from PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S stores on May 27, leaving the Spacer’s Choice Edition in its place. The decision will not affect players who already own the game, and many of them will actually benefit from it: owners of the base game on those platforms will receive the expanded edition for free.

Obsidian has announced that it will remove the base edition of the first The Outer Worlds from PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S storefronts. The decision does not extend to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Nintendo Switch, meaning the situation will remain different on those platforms, but on newer systems the studio will leave only the more recent Spacer’s Choice Edition available going forward. The change mainly affects players who plan to buy the sci-fi RPG in the future: those who already own the game will not lose access and can continue playing whenever they want.

The move also comes with genuinely good news for many fans. Players who purchased the base game on PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X/S will receive the Spacer’s Choice Edition completely free as compensation. This edition is not merely replacing the old version in stores, either, because it will also receive several new features designed to give players a reason to return, or to discover Obsidian‘s corporate-satire sci-fi universe for the first time.

According to the announcement published on Steam, Obsidian will remove The Outer Worlds from PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S stores on May 27. From that point on, “the only version of The Outer Worlds available on most purchase platforms will be the Spacer’s Choice Edition.” The studio also made the compensation clear: “If you own at least the base edition of The Outer Worlds before May 27, you’ll receive the Spacer’s Choice Edition for free. That’s right, free! This applies to all platforms where the Spacer’s Choice Edition is available: Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG.”

It is also worth noting that Obsidian is changing the pricing of its sci-fi RPG. According to the announcement, starting May 27, players who want to upgrade from the base game to the Spacer’s Choice Edition on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 will need to own the base game and both The Outer Worlds DLCs. “That said, we’re removing the paid upgrade, and if you own everything, the Spacer’s Choice Edition will be yours,” the Steam announcement reads. The base game and DLCs will also receive price adjustments on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, moving to $24.99 and $14.99 respectively.

Obsidian Will Update The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition With New Features

Obsidian is not stopping at reorganizing the storefront versions, because part of the team has been dedicated to improving the Spacer’s Choice Edition experience. The developers have prepared two updates that will fix bugs and add new features to the sci-fi RPG. The first update is already available and fixes some issues still present in the game, while the second, scheduled for release this May, will introduce more visible changes.

The upcoming update will include lighting changes, mission fixes, gameplay and performance improvements, and the ability to use grenades. That last addition is especially notable, because it gives The Outer Worlds‘ combat system a tool that was previously missing from the player’s arsenal. As a result, the Spacer’s Choice Edition will not only serve as the replacement for the base version on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, but also as a genuinely expanded, improved edition with additional features.

Overall, the future of the first The Outer Worlds is now clearer on newer platforms: the base edition is disappearing from certain stores, the Spacer’s Choice Edition will remain the main version, and existing owners can treat the transition not as a loss, but as a free upgrade. A large part of the fanbase has therefore reacted positively to the decision, since Obsidian is not simply removing an older edition, but also giving tangible compensation to players who already spent money on the game.
