Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Almost Received DLC, But There Is A Good Reason You Will Never Play It

The Final Fantasy VII Rebirth experience could have been even bigger, as Square Enix seriously considered developing a story DLC. The expansion was ultimately cancelled so that all resources could be focused on the third part of the trilogy.

The Final Fantasy VII Rebirth experience could have been even bigger. Square Enix was on the verge of starting work on a post-launch DLC, but the project was ultimately shelved. That may be good news for many players, because the Japanese company decided to scrap the expansion after concluding that it was more important to prioritize production of the third installment in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy than to be sidetracked by expanding the second game.

The existence of the DLC, as well as its cancellation, came to light in an interview that Naoki Hamaguchi, the game’s director, gave to ntower. “Regarding Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, we seriously considered developing a story DLC right before the project officially entered the planning phase,” Hamaguchi explained. “However, in the context of a long-term trilogy, we concluded that developing the DLC for the second installment in parallel with the third would inevitably have impacted the game’s schedule and overall quality.”

Square Enix therefore decided to dedicate all its resources to the production of the third installment, still without an official title, so that players could complete Cloud and company’s journey in a shorter amount of time. “At that time, I believed my primary role wasn’t to add DLC, but to deliver the third game to fans as soon as possible with a level of polish that would satisfy them. For that reason, we decided to forgo the Rebirth story DLC,” Hamaguchi added.

A Door That Has Not Closed For The Third Installment

So, can we expect DLC for the third part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy? In theory, yes, since Square Enix would no longer be under the same pressure to immediately prioritize the next main installment, meaning it could devote more time and resources to post-launch content. However, Hamaguchi made it clear that the team would only begin such a project if there were genuine interest from the community.

“Regarding DLC for the third installment, I think it will ultimately depend on the continued support fans give to Final Fantasy VII as a title and franchise. If there is significant demand, we would certainly be open to proactively exploring those possibilities,” the director said. That is not an official announcement, but it clearly leaves the door open for extra content after the trilogy reaches its conclusion.

You do not need to be an expert video game analyst to predict that Hamaguchi’s words will probably make many players start expecting DLC for the third installment. Even so, many details about the game itself still need to be clarified before post-launch content can be discussed seriously. Square Enix staff members continue to share small pieces of information about the RPG from time to time, but there is still no first trailer, official title, or release date. Hopefully, those details will not take too much longer, and one of the major industry events will finally offer a clearer look at the closing chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy.
