Warez versions of the highly anticipated sequel have already started circulating, even though the game is still in early access. One of the developers has responded to this.
When a pirated version of Subnautica 2 began circulating before the official release, some people boasted about it directly on the official Discord channel, having avoided paying the game’s $30 price tag. Anthony Gallegos, the game’s design lead, sent a message to one such pirate, thanking them for downloading the game he had spent years working on. He also expressed his disappointment that someone would do such a thing since it is how he makes a living. He hopes they will reconsider their life choices. Some members of the r/piracy subreddit reacted harshly to the designer’s statement, with some claiming he must be fabulously wealthy, as if a golden man were spitting on a homeless person.
Subnautica 2 Dev Responds To Someone Who Pirated The Game Before Release

While it’s not surprising that r/piracy users support piracy, the hostility was unexpected. Even die-hard pirates know not to rub it in someone’s face that they’ve pirated their game. It’s naive to think that average employees at a game studio are rolling in money. The situation was not helped by the ongoing confusion surrounding Krafton’s failed attempt to avoid paying the $250 million it reportedly owes to the founders and CEO of the development company, Unknown Worlds. A portion of this sum could also go to other studio members – the details are unknown.
“Just to be clear, pirates are going to do their thing. We were all kids once. Money is tight, and the economy is hard. I get it. It wasn’t the piracy itself that bothered me. What bothered me was the people who flagrantly walked in here and waved it in the faces of people waiting to play legitimately. That’s what aggravated me. Also, the Reddit responses keep acting like I’m a millionaire, which I’m not. I’m not. I don’t own a home. I rent. There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and we just wanted the best launch possible for our team. In short, I understand, and I thank you for ultimately supporting the studio. I cannot condone piracy, but I understand why people do it. I would much rather people buy the game, try it for an hour, and return it than play it illicitly,” Gallegos clarified on Discord later on.

However, this comment received a more sympathetic response on r/piracy, where users viewed the bragging on Discord as a violation of pirate etiquette or a desire for self-aggrandizing validation.
