Grand Theft Auto VI: Should It Have Been Released A Year Ago? [VIDEO]

Take-Two’s CEO made a bold statement about the long-awaited and highly secretive game.

Long before the tenth anniversary of Grand Theft Auto V, it was clear that Grand Theft Auto VI would be the biggest video game launch of all time – and likely the biggest launch in the history of the entertainment industry, across all sectors – whenever it is released. This is why Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledges that Rockstar needs time, even though the current release date of Grand Theft Auto VI is about 18 months later than originally planned.

In an interview with David Senra, Zelnick said that Grand Theft Auto VI is only about 18 months behind schedule, meaning we could have been playing it for about a year now if everything had gone according to the original development plan. Although players may be frustrated knowing they should have been in Vice City long ago, Zelnick’s comments support earlier reports that a 2025 release date for Grand Theft Auto VI was unrealistic.

Even when Take-Two first publicly confirmed the 2025 release window in 2024, rumors had already been circulating for two months that the game would be delayed from early 2025 to 2026, which is precisely what happened. They pushed the release back further from May to November. Regardless of when it is released, Zelnick made it clear that Rockstar will get as much time as it needs. A year ago, Zelnick said the most important task is supporting the teams in their pursuit of perfection, though he acknowledges the delays are painful. (Let’s be honest: for his wallet.)

Of course, given that they reportedly spent billions on Grand Theft Auto VI, Take-Two can’t afford to keep the game in development forever. When asked recently if the game would be delayed again, Zelnick was extremely confident and even joked about another delay.
