007 First Light: IO Interactive’s First Non-Hitman Game in Over a Decade Is a Hit

The Danish team has already released its initial sales figures for the story of the young James Bond, which has enjoyed outstanding success.

IO Interactive’s first game in years that is not based on the Hitman IP has been a massive success. The studio announced on Twitter that 007 First Light officially sold 1.5 million copies in the first 24 hours after release – one day after the full release and two days after the early access version for deluxe edition owners became available. The last time IO Interactive developed and released a game that didn’t focus on Agent 47 was in 2010 with Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days. Since then, the studio has become known as “the developer of Hitman,” so it must be thrilling for the team that their Bond project was an immediate commercial success.

Convincing IO Interactive to make a James Bond game was like mixing peanut butter with chocolate in the world of game development. However, that didn’t guarantee it would sell over a million copies or become one of the year’s highest-rated games and a potential Game of the Year contender for 2026. Given this initial commercial and critical success, the question arises: Can IO Interactive repeat this success? In the past, the rule was that only the actor who played Bond in the films could portray him in other projects.

However, now that Amazon MGM Studios has become the new owner of the Bond IP, this rule may be broken for the first time in the franchise’s history. This would allow IO’s Bond, Patrick Gibson, to continue playing the role in sequels while a different actor takes the reins in new films. Alternatively, this could be Gibson’s soft introduction as the next Bond in the near future.

Either way, anything that allows IO Interactive to continue making games in this universe will be a win for 007 First Light fans.
