MOVIE NEWS – Indiana Jones may have closed his latest big-screen chapter with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, but Disney and Marvel have already prepared the legendary archaeologist’s next official release. This September, fans are getting a collector-focused edition that brings back one of the franchise’s classic and increasingly hard-to-collect eras in premium form.
Indiana Jones may have finished his most recent cinematic adventure at the end of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, but Disney and Marvel are clearly not letting the legendary archaeologist’s legacy end with the movies. Marvel has announced two premium hardcover volumes for September that bring back the classic Indiana Jones comics from the 1980s. These releases are not simply nostalgic reprints. They are collector-focused editions designed to restore a period when Indy’s adventures actively expanded beyond the films.
Marvel Is Bringing Indiana Jones’ Classic Comics Back in Style
The two volumes are titled Indiana Jones: The Further Adventures Book I and Indiana Jones: The Further Adventures Book II, and both are scheduled for release on September 30. The books collect Marvel’s classic 1980s Indiana Jones era, including the film adaptations as well as the full run of The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones. The first volume includes Marvel Super Special #18 and #30, adapting Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, along with The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones #1-16. The second hardcover continues with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade #1-4 and The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones #17-34.
Marvel is also emphasizing the presentation. Both hardcovers will feature leatherette-style binding, debossed cover details and ribbon bookmarks. For Indiana Jones, that choice feels especially appropriate, since the entire franchise is built around lost relics, historical objects and treasures that look as if they belong in a museum. These editions therefore bring Indy’s comic book past back not only as reading material, but also as physical collector’s pieces that fit the tone of the character’s world.
Legendary Comic Creators Helped Shape Indiana Jones’ Expanded Universe
One of the biggest attractions of these collections is the creative lineup behind the original comics. Marvel’s classic Indiana Jones run featured major names including Walter Simonson, David Michelinie, John Byrne, Dennis O’Neil, Archie Goodwin and Christopher Priest. On the art side, the series included work from John Buscema, Howard Chaykin, Steve Ditko, David Mazzucchelli, Herb Trimpe and several other influential creators. The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones was not merely a minor tie-in sitting in the shadow of a successful film series. The comics arrived during the height of Indy’s popularity, when he had become one of Hollywood’s defining adventure heroes, and Marvel used that momentum to send him into new artifact hunts, exotic locations and standalone quests.
Disney and Marvel’s decision is notable because Indiana Jones has retained his cultural weight even after the most recent film. The new release gives younger readers a clearer way into classic Indy adventures that existed outside the movies for decades, while longtime collectors finally get a coordinated premium edition of Marvel material that had become increasingly difficult to gather in complete form. The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones proved that Indy’s world did not only work on the big screen: its pulpy, globe-trotting, artifact-driven adventure structure was also a natural fit for comics.
