Assassin’s Creed Shadows is finally getting the story conclusion many players felt was missing from the base game. The free three-mission arc Black Tides promises to close the story of Naoe and Yasuke as Ubisoft originally intended.
It has been more than a year since the release of the highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed that was expected to help put Ubisoft back on track after years of uncertainty and mismanagement. Shadows reached the market with enormous ambition, intense pressure and, most importantly for the publisher, commercial success. Still, anyone who played through the French open-world RPG noticed one thing: the ending felt far too abrupt. The „true ending” of Naoe and Yasuke’s story was not implemented, or at least that is how Ubisoft is now framing it, and today’s major content update is meant to correct that.
Although Shadows offered more than 80 hours of content, its credits rolled too soon for many players. The audience had barely realized it was approaching the grand finale when the game ended, so Ubisoft has now moved to fix the issue, even if it comes somewhat late. The three-mission story arc Black Tides arrives on June 16 and is completely free for all players.
According to Ubisoft, the new adventure will pit the protagonists against a fresh threat arriving in Japan: two elite Templars known as „Black Cross,” sent to hunt down Naoe and Yasuke after the events of the base game. It is not yet clear exactly how these new missions will unfold, but the French team has hinted that, as usual in the series, the Templars are driven by more than simple revenge. To access Black Tides, players must have completed the main campaign as well as Ubisoft’s two previously released extra missions, A Critical Encounter and A Puzzlement.
New Gear and Black Flag Resynced Rewards Are Also Coming
Beyond the story content, the update will introduce Domains, a new Animus activity designed as a challenge for veteran players. This mode consists of a series of trials built to test the character builds of both Naoe and Yasuke, offering higher-level endgame gear and new character upgrades in return. These rewards are especially useful for tackling Black Tides, meaning the update does not merely close the story, but also gives the endgame one more push.
Ubisoft is also launching two new Projects, which work as a kind of shared battle pass between Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Resynced. These will unlock rewards for both games, including pirate-themed gear for Naoe and Yasuke and outfits inspired by feudal Japan for Edward Kenway. In that sense, Ubisoft is both closing its Asian adventure and preparing its return to the Caribbean.
Black Tides, then, does not look like just another late side mission, but rather the conclusion many players expected to see at the end of the base game. The real question is how many people Ubisoft can bring back for Naoe and Yasuke’s final major conflict, 453 days after launch.
