Is a Remake in the Works for One of Capcom’s Best-Known PS2 Games?

No, we are not talking about Resident Evil: Veronica, which has already been announced, but something else.

Reports claim that Capcom is remaking one of its best PS2 games from an action-adventure series that last received a new installment in 2019. Capcom has now become synonymous with remakes thanks to the Resident Evil remakes, but because the company is effectively treating only that IP this way, fans of many other franchises may be disappointed. Dino Crisis, Devil May Cry, Mega Man, Monster Hunter – some of these series are at least active, such as Monster Hunter, while others are semi-active, such as Devil May Cry. There are also franchises being completely ignored, including Dino Crisis, which is truly asleep aside from its first two entries appearing on GOG.

MajorPlayeix, a source that has proven reliable in the past but does not have a flawless track record, so the following should be treated with caution, claims that Capcom is currently working on a Devil May Cry remake. Unfortunately, the rumor goes no further than that. It does not mention platforms, a release window, or even an announcement date. There is nothing beyond the claim that development of a remake of the first game is underway, a rumor that has surfaced here and there in occasional form during the past year.

Developed and published by Capcom, Devil May Cry debuted in 2001 as a project initiated by Hideki Kamiya, who is known as the creator of Okami and Bayonetta, the director of Resident Evil 2, a co-founder of PlatinumGames, and naturally the creator of Devil May Cry. The game was clearly a major success, as demonstrated by the franchise consisting of several games, including a reboot, and two animated television series. It scored 94 on Metacritic at launch and sold very well. Unfortunately for Capcom’s game, it was released into an incredibly strong field that included Grand Theft Auto III, Halo: Combat Evolved, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, which prevented it from winning numerous awards.

By 2026, the game is not only hard to access, but it no longer holds up very well either, which is why a remake is needed. The series runs on RE Engine, which has proven to be highly flexible and particularly suitable for remakes. It has always seemed likely that Devil May Cry would receive the Resident Evil-style remake treatment as well, and the only real question was when. Given the popularity of the animated series, it is easy to imagine this remake arriving sooner rather than later.
