Spider-Man: Brand New Day Director Reveals What Inspired the Film’s Biggest Action Scenes

MOVIE NEWS – Destin Daniel Cretton says Insomniac Games’ PlayStation titles had a major influence on the action scenes in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The stunt team drew direct inspiration from the popular video game series when developing several of the film’s moves.

Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man series has become one of PlayStation’s most important first-party franchises. Its latest installment, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, remains the studio’s highest-rated game to date, and the series’ influence has now extended to the big screen, with the PlayStation titles serving as a major source of inspiration for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

This is particularly significant because many players consider Insomniac’s work the pinnacle of modern superhero games. The studio is also widely praised for its dedication to capturing Spider-Man’s personality, movements, and distinctive fighting style.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Launches on July 31

During an interview with Polygon, director Destin Daniel Cretton described Insomniac’s games as a “great inspiration” for certain stunts featured in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This is particularly fitting since the games go to great lengths to capture every aspect of Spider-Man’s mannerisms, including his web-swinging, acrobatics, combat, and distinctive physical behavior.

Cretton also admitted that he is not much of a gamer himself, although he has personally played Insomniac’s work. Many members of the stunt department loved the games, so they captured images of specific moves and examined whether those actions could be recreated with real performers. “I am not a gamer, but I’ve played the game. A lot of people in our stunt department loved playing those games. They would do screen grabs and say like, ‘Can we pull this move off?’” the director explained.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remains a Fan-Favorite PlayStation Franchise

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day set to arrive on July 31, the film could also generate renewed interest in Insomniac’s three existing Spider-Man games, allowing the movie and video game series to benefit from each other. Insomniac is reportedly working on Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, while a Venom-focused DLC is also rumored to be in development, although the studio has yet to officially comment on the future of the franchise.
