The retail PlayStation 5 edition of Grand Theft Auto VI contains a digital download code rather than a game disc, and that code can only be redeemed through an account registered in the appropriate region. This could create an expensive problem for Hungarian customers who purchase a boxed copy in the United Kingdom and later attempt to activate it through a Hungarian PlayStation account.

Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that the version described as the physical edition of Grand Theft Auto VI will not contain a Blu-ray disc at all. The box will instead include a digital code requiring customers to download the complete game to their console. Retail copies are expected to become available for collection or shipping from November 12, allowing buyers to preload ahead of the November 19 launch. The packaging therefore remains physical, but the product itself functions in every important respect as a digital licence.

On PlayStation 5, the code’s eligibility is not determined simply by the country in which the console happens to be located. What matters is the country selected when the PlayStation account was registered and the regional group assigned to the purchased code. Rockstar consequently recommends buying from a retailer operating in the country associated with the customer’s platform account, since a mismatch may prevent activation.

The United Kingdom appears as an independent PlayStation region in Rockstar’s list, meaning codes bought there are intended exclusively for accounts registered in the UK. Hungary, by contrast, belongs to the “Rest of EMEA and Asia” group alongside Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and numerous other markets, so British and Hungarian codes do not fall within the same redemption area.

This distinction has clear practical importance for Hungary. Tens of thousands of Hungarians live in the United Kingdom, while an earlier Office for National Statistics estimate placed the Hungarian-born population there at close to 100,000, making it entirely plausible that someone might buy the game in a British shop before bringing or sending it home as a gift. The box will look like the same complete retail product sold by Hungarian stores, yet the code inside may not function through a Hungary-registered PlayStation account. A customer might only discover the incompatibility after opening the package and attempting to enter the code. Because digital codes are much harder to return or resell than an unopened disc, buying the wrong regional edition could result in a substantial financial loss.

It is important to distinguish the account restriction from the physical location of the game or console. A UK code should still be redeemable from Hungary through a PlayStation account registered in the United Kingdom; the conflict arises when the code belongs to the UK while the intended account is Hungarian. Customers should make the same check before ordering from an overseas retailer, purchasing a second-hand copy or accepting a boxed edition bought abroad as a present.

Japan faces an even stricter condition, as Japanese PlayStation codes expire 170 days after their November 19, 2026 issuance date. Rockstar attributes the deadline to regional regulations, meaning an unused code left inside a Japanese box could become worthless in less than six months. Xbox Series X|S buyers do not face the equivalent territorial restriction because Rockstar explicitly states that Xbox codes are not region-locked. Although both console packages contain digital codes rather than discs, importing the PlayStation edition therefore carries considerably greater risk.

Only the Standard Edition will be offered in a retail box, with one code activating the full game and the Vintage Vice City Pack preorder content. There will be no physical Ultimate Edition, and Standard Edition owners can purchase the Ultimate Edition Upgrade digitally only after successfully redeeming the base game. A regional mismatch can therefore block access at the first step, while the package provides neither the lasting ownership nor the resale freedom normally associated with a genuine disc release.
