GOG Finally Answers a Long-Standing Request as Galaxy Heads to Linux

HANDHELD NEWS – GOG has officially confirmed that work is underway on native Linux support for its Galaxy application, a development that could make accessing the store’s games considerably easier on Steam Deck. The company has already hired a specialist to lead the effort, although it is not yet prepared to announce a release date.

One of the GOG community’s oldest and most persistent requests may finally become reality. The company has confirmed that it is actively developing native Linux support for GOG Galaxy, which should eventually remove the need for third-party applications and unofficial workarounds. The move could be especially valuable for Steam Deck owners looking for a more convenient way to install, update, and manage games purchased through the storefront. GOG has already recruited a specialist with the necessary Linux experience, but no launch window has been established.

GOG Galaxy Is Preparing for Linux

GOG co-CEO Krzysztof Papliński confirmed the initiative in an email sent to GamingOnLinux. According to the executive, the company is fully aware of how long its community has been waiting for official Linux compatibility. “Linux continues to be one of the most frequently asked topics in our community, and we appreciate the passion and patience of everyone who has been inquiring about it,” he wrote. “We now have a specialist on board and are actively exploring the best way to address Linux support for GOG Galaxy.”

Many players had already interpreted GOG’s earlier recruitment activity as evidence that the company was preparing to expand beyond Windows. A software engineering vacancy published earlier this year described Linux as the company’s “next big frontier,” strongly suggesting that native compatibility had entered its internal roadmap. GOG now appears to have selected the person it believes can take responsibility for the challenge and begin shaping the eventual Linux version of Galaxy.

The announcement does not mean that the application is close to release, but it confirms that the project has progressed beyond informal consideration. GOG is now treating native Linux support as a genuine development objective, one that could considerably improve the experience of Steam Deck users and players running other Linux-based systems.

GOG has nevertheless warned that completing the work may require a considerable amount of time because of the project’s scale and technical complexity. Papliński described Linux support as a “major undertaking,” explaining that the company is not yet ready to publish a timetable, detailed plans, or demonstrable results. “While we’re not yet ready to share specific plans, timelines, or concrete results, it’s an area we’re investing time and effort in,” he said. “We’re excited about the possibilities and will be happy to share more information when the time is right!”
