MOVIE NEWS – In the adventure film Heart of the Beast, a German Shepherd named Odin is Brad Pitt’s loyal companion in the merciless wilderness. The “Pitt plus dog” formula already promises to be a winning combination, but the filmmakers have added quite a few extras as well.

According to the film’s story, James Belmont, a retired Special Forces officer played by Pitt, and his equally retired combat dog, Odin, become stranded in the Alaskan wilderness following a plane crash. During their struggle for survival, both are forced to confront the physical and psychological injuries of their past.

Odin is not merely a four-legged companion or a family-friendly accessory, as he has a story of his own. The veteran combat dog wears a detachable prosthetic limb and a silver dental implant because of injuries sustained during earlier missions, and he also suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which causes him to have nightmares.

The complex assignment required a canine performer with exceptional abilities. Odin is played by Uber, a German Shepherd from New Zealand who was raised by specialists involved in breeding first-aid, police, and military working dogs. During filming, he was accompanied by professional animal trainer Andrew Simpson, who previously proved his expertise on major productions including John Wick, Game of Thrones, and The Revenant.

The role demanded an exceptionally complex physical and emotional commitment from the dog. One special and heartwarming behind-the-scenes detail is that Odin’s puppy scenes in the film’s flashbacks were played by Uber’s own puppies, Seeka, Ryker, and Hondo.

The producing team behind Heart of the Beast includes Brad Pitt himself, Olivia Hamilton, and Academy Award winner Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, La La Land). The cast also features Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Anna Lambe, known from the series True Detective.
