Remedy Entertainment has packed considerably more content into the sequel, even though fully exploring the first game was hardly a brief undertaking. Achieving 100% completion could require as many as 50 hours.
Remedy lead game designer Sergey Mohov revealed that Control Resonant will be the Finnish studio’s longest game to date. Mohov confirmed that completing the core experience will take approximately 30 hours, while achieving 100% completion may require as many as 50. This is significantly longer than the original Control, whose complete playthrough did not even reach 30 hours, meaning it could essentially take twice as long to uncover every secret in Remedy’s next project. Part of the reason can be found in the change of genre: Control Resonant is the studio’s first action RPG, and experienced players know that this genre generally requires more time than purely action-focused titles.
We already know, for example, that protagonist Jesse Faden will be able to complete a series of World Quests, side activities encountered while exploring the game’s uniquely distorted version of Manhattan. Regarding combat, Mohov explained that the team drew inspiration from fast-paced Japanese-style action games during development.
“We use different references for individual parts of the experience. I am a big fan of Devil May Cry 2 and Devil May Cry 3, as well as PlatinumGames’ titles. It would be very difficult to name a single inspiration, but I think the more you play the game, the more you will notice elements that have appeared in other projects. However, I do not think you could directly say that Control Resonant is exactly like another specific game. We learn from all of these projects to understand what works and what does not, but I do not think you have played anything exactly like this before,” Mohov said.
We will not have to wait much longer to experience the melee-focused sequel. Control Resonant will be released on September 24 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
