Cold Symmetry has unexpectedly released the previously PC-only Mortal Shell 2 beta on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Console players can spend three hours with the soulslike and carry their progress into the final version.
Cold Symmetry has delivered a surprise for console players. On Friday afternoon, the studio announced that the Mortal Shell 2 beta, previously available only on PC through Steam, can now be played on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The developers are already entering the final stretch ahead of the game’s scheduled August 20 launch, but they continued to receive large numbers of requests from Mortal Shell fans asking for the free trial to reach consoles.
The team consequently decided to adapt the experience for both PlayStation and Xbox. The release fulfills one of the community’s most frequent requests while giving a much broader audience an opportunity to sample the sequel shortly before launch.
The announcement arrived alongside a new trailer filled with brutal combat encounters and oppressive, dark environments. Cold Symmetry explained that, with slightly more than two and a half weeks remaining before launch, it had one more surprise to share by making the Mortal Shell 2 beta immediately available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The console version offers the same content previously featured in the Steam beta. Players can explore the soulslike for three hours, and any progress made during the trial can be transferred into the complete game.
The developers also reminded players that spending more than 30 minutes in the beta automatically unlocks an exclusive cosmetic known as the Flayed Harbinger. The reward can be redeemed after the full game launches on August 20, and the studio added that bringing the PC beta to consoles had been by far the most common request it received.
Fans of soulslikes, dark fantasy worlds, and demanding combat can therefore test their abilities immediately on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S. The beta should be particularly useful for anyone who wants to decide whether the sequel’s combat system and setting meet their expectations before buying it.
Problems With the Physical Edition of Mortal Shell 2
Cold Symmetry and official publisher Playstack are simultaneously attempting to address one of the most widely discussed issues surrounding Mortal Shell 2. Preorders for the physical Revered Edition greatly exceeded expectations, causing every available copy to sell out.
The developer and publisher are speaking with suppliers and manufacturers in an effort to produce additional units before August 20. They cannot guarantee that every customer will receive a Revered Edition, however, and there is no confirmed plan to replenish the stock after launch, making it likely that some players will miss out on the physical release.
