MOVIE NEWS – The second season of Amazon’s God of War adaptation will add a twist to the story.

Filming of the series was put on hold when the lead actor, Ryan Hurst, suffered a severe bicep tear. Since Hurst will require more time to recover than expected, the decision was made to recast the role of Kratos, which will delay filming in Vancouver until October. The studio is currently searching for a new actor to play the Spartan, which will undoubtedly delay the project’s completion further. However, this won’t be the only recasting in the series. Unlike the accident that forced the initial change, two other lead roles will be played by new actors as part of creative decisions planned for season two.

There has been talk of bringing in a new actor for the role of Atreus for some time. Last year, a character codenamed “Joshua” appeared in the casting calls for the first season. The character was described as recurring for one year, and the character profile matched Atreus’s in every respect except the name. This suggested that another actor would play Atreus once the series began adapting the events of Ragnarök. Casting announcements for the second season confirm this suspicion, as in May, ads were posted for the teenage versions of Joshua (Atreus) and Ruth (Thor’s daughter Thrud).

While Callum Vinson and Island Austin played the younger versions of Atreus and Thrud in the first season, older actors will officially take over the roles in the second season. The latest casting calls sought actors between 14 and 17 years old, a significant increase from the first season, when they were looking for actors aged 9–12. The description in the latest casting calls for the second season reads as follows:

“After growing up in isolation in a cabin in the woods, Joshua embarked on a daring and dangerous adventure with his father. This adventure strengthened their bond but also threw everything into question. At the end of the journey, he had a revelation suggesting that he may have a destiny greater than he could have imagined. When we meet him in Season 2, he is eager to learn more about his identity. He is empathetic, brave, and immensely curious about the world. However, as he finds his new identity and grows into manhood, his trusting nature leaves him vulnerable to manipulation. He must be comfortable with physical combat, especially archery,” for teen Joshua (Atreus).

“Because of an incident that changed the course of her life, Ruth is wise beyond her years. Confident, intelligent, and sarcastic, her tough exterior masks a childlike vulnerability that causes her to become vindictive and cruel when she is hurt. Though she has a complicated relationship with her parents, she shares a special connection with her grandfather, the king. She believes he will choose her to be the heir to the throne one day. She must be comfortable with physical combat,” for teen Ruth (Thrud):

Judging by the details in the casting descriptions, the second season will begin immediately with the events of Ragnarök. Unlike HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, which stretches a single story across multiple seasons, Amazon’s God of War takes a direct approach, with each season covering the corresponding game in the Norse saga. As for the rest of the confirmed cast for the first season, we can expect to see numerous members of the Norse pantheon alongside fan favorites. Callum Vinson as young Atreus, Island Austin as young Thrud, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Max Parker as Heimdal, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Ben Chapple as Magni, Louis Cunningham as Modi, Sonya Walger as Freya, Danny Woodburn as Brok, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Evelyn Miller as Gna. Alastair Duncan will reprise his role as Mimir.

However, fans will have to be patient before they can see the events of the games unfold on screen. Due to the search for a new Kratos and the extensive reshoots required for the four episodes already filmed, the Prime Video premiere could be delayed until 2028.
