According to Sony, Marathon Is Performing Well Following the Launch of Its Second Season!

Therefore, the company does not view the metrics for its latest live-service experiment as disappointing.

The Marathon reboot, developed by the renowned team behind Destiny and Halo, was released earlier this year and soon faded from most conversations. Steam’s latest player statistics weren’t impressive, either, prompting concern about the game’s future. Amid this uncertainty, however, Sony has come forward with encouraging news about the game.

The company notes that Marathon has performed well since the release of Season 2, providing Bungie with positive news about one of PlayStation’s largest live-service projects. In its latest financial report, Sony addressed Marathon’s performance and highlighted the improvement in results following the launch of Season 2. The company’s comments suggest that the update generated momentum for the game. However, Sony did not disclose specific player numbers or sales figures in the report.

Sony also noted a high retention rate, which may reflect a select group of returning players rather than a significant portion of the game’s audience. According to Sony, Marathon maintains a high user retention rate while also acquiring new users. This is good news for Bungie, as Sony appears more optimistic about Marathon after Season 2 than during the game’s earlier stages.

After ending support for Destiny 2 and undergoing several rounds of layoffs, Bungie is now focusing all its efforts on Marathon. We hope the team will be able to get the game off the ground, especially now that PlayStation has joined the project. However, we still believe that the more live-service games there are, the less time each one has, because they all have to compete with Fortnite for players’ attention. That’s no easy task, and thus, no surprise that many games just end up flopping.
