MOVIE NEWS – Will Gluck (Anyone But You), rightly hailed as a master of romantic comedies, is making another bid for the title of the Big Summer Rom-Com, and expectations suggest that One Night Only will not disappoint.
The story takes place in an alternate America where premarital sex is illegal on 364 days of the year. There is, however, one night when the restriction is lifted, prompting singles to flood major cities in search of a partner. In an interview with Collider, Will Gluck revealed that he was immediately captivated by Travis Braun’s original idea, which can be summed up as The Purge wrapped in a sex-comedy package. The thriller The Purge, which has received several sequels over the years, is set in a future America where the government releases social tension by allowing any crime to be committed without punishment for one day each year.
The director did not want to make a dystopian political satire, however, and was more interested in how an individual might react to such a bizarre situation. While New York City turns into one gigantic party venue, the two main characters, Allie (Monica Barbaro) and Owen (Callum Turner), are looking for the exact opposite: genuine, profound emotions.
Although One Night Only has no intention of lecturing or preaching to its audience, it contains quite a few pointed jabs. For example, it holds up a distorted mirror to today’s dating culture. In an interview with Black Girl Nerds, Gluck explained that his movie can also be viewed as a critique of the world of dating apps. Tinder, Bumble, and similar platforms put young people under the same kind of pressure as the movie’s “sex on only one day” law. On dating platforms, the number of choices appears endless, but the time available is limited, while the emphasis is placed on immediate gratification. Gluck says the movie explores whether we are still capable of noticing genuine romance amid compulsive rushing and artificially generated noise.
Gluck also pointed out on The Weekend Warrior Show that he believes the movie will be worth watching several times, because the small, absurd stories unfolding in the background give the narrative its true satirical depth. Every fragment of conversation and flashing neon sign reflects the story’s message in some way, and discovering them should be highly entertaining.
