The event was never shown in any previous MCU movie or television series, meaning audiences did not miss an important earlier chapter.
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle form a surprisingly effective partnership throughout Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Their relationship is hostile, funny, and strangely friendly at the same time, and one of the main sources of their constant arguments is an earlier confrontation on Staten Island.
Peter Parker repeatedly insists that he saved Frank’s life that day. The Punisher objects every time, maintaining that Spider-Man’s intervention was unnecessary because he had the entire situation under control.
The movie reveals that Frank became involved in a confrontation with a drug dealer operating on Staten Island. According to Peter, the criminal was about to shoot Castle when Spider-Man webbed the weapon and kicked the attacker backward into a shipping container.
Frank naturally remembers the encounter very differently. He argues that the criminal could not have hit him with a handful of rice and that he had the man exactly where he wanted him, meaning Peter only interfered with a situation that never required his help.
The Staten Island Incident Could Become the MCU’s New Budapest
The event was not depicted in any theatrical movie or Disney+ series. Spider-Man and the Punisher had never appeared together on screen before Brand New Day, so Staten Island functions as a newly created piece of shared history that immediately establishes the dynamic between the characters.
The mystery strongly resembles Hawkeye and Black Widow’s Budapest mission. Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff first referenced their shared experience in Hungary during 2012’s The Avengers, but audiences did not learn what actually happened until Black Widow provided an explanation nine years later.
Marvel could keep the Staten Island story hidden for a similarly long period. The incident may eventually provide material for another Spider-Man movie, a future Punisher project, or a flashback that finally reveals which character’s version is closer to the truth.
It is also possible that the studio will never provide a complete answer because the joke works precisely because Peter becomes increasingly proud of the story while Frank angrily denies that he ever needed to be rescued. The Staten Island incident already serves as a perfect summary of Spider-Man and the Punisher’s unusual friendship.
