GAMING NEWS – The complete engine behind The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind can now run in a desktop browser tab thanks to OpenMW-Web: no streaming or emulation is involved, although the full game still requires the data files from a legally purchased copy.

Bethesda’s 2002 role-playing game has once again proved that virtually nothing is impossible for its modding community. According to a report by 3DJuegos, the developer known as Dumpster_Buddy compiled the open-source OpenMW engine to WebAssembly, allowing the game’s actual engine to run inside a browser tab. This is neither a cloud-streamed version nor an emulator: graphics, controls and save files all run locally on the user’s computer.

The project is available as OpenMW-Web. To launch the complete Morrowind experience, players must point the browser to the Data Files folder from a legally purchased copy; the browser reads those files directly from the drive and does not upload them to a remote server. The Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions are supported, along with mods using the .esp, .esm and .bsa formats.

A free demo and a full browser-based version

Anyone who does not own the game can still test the technology through a free sample world. This small island runs without a local installation or Morrowind data files, while the full version supports save games, controllers, shadows and water effects. The developer also plans to add multiplayer functionality and an integrated mod manager later.

OpenMW-Web currently works best in desktop versions of Chrome, Edge and Brave, and loading local game files requires a Chromium-based browser. The project’s source code is public and the engine itself is licensed under GPLv3, but it does not include Bethesda’s copyrighted game data. Morrowind can therefore be taken almost anywhere, although the complete classic still requires a copy of your own.
