With the price of RAM skyrocketing and securing supplies posing an ongoing challenge for companies worldwide, the cost of consumer electronics, including laptops, has increased significantly over the past year. So it may come as a surprise that a company is preparing to destroy over 100 MacBook Pros. According to a recent Reddit post, a tech company is preparing to destroy over 100 MacBook Pro laptops.

The most shocking aspect of this story is that these MacBook Pros reportedly have 48 GB of RAM. A former employee of the company in question claims that the firm is doing this because it closed its office in the country and laid off more than 200 employees. This story is also interesting, of course, because hardware prices have skyrocketed recently. A similarly equipped MacBook Pro can easily cost more than $3,000, especially since Apple recently increased its hardware prices.

Unsurprisingly, most Reddit users aren’t happy about this decision. In fact, they’re currently criticizing the company for destroying perfectly usable hardware. One Reddit user also suggested that the company may have made this decision to secure a tax deduction by claiming the laid-off employees as a loss.

This isn’t the first time a company has contributed to the rise in electronic waste on such a scale, of course. However, the fact that everyone is on high alert due to the global memory shortage makes the timing particularly unfortunate compared to similar cases in the past. Nevertheless, it’s true that workstation PCs and laptops can hold their own on the second-hand market because they’re typically equipped with more powerful processors and often GPUs too. They aren’t exactly „desktop” configurations, but they’re reliable.

Nevertheless, this is yet another disgusting example of greed.
