‘If Anyone Deserves to Be Independent, We Do’: Take-Two CEO Rejects Acquisition Talk

Strauss Zelnick says Rockstar’s parent company is proud of its independence and has no need for an acquirer.

The Take-Two chief executive was asked on CNBC about Netflix’s video game strategy and whether the streaming company could be interested in acquiring the publisher. The conversation also touched on GTA VI, a release expected to strengthen the market position of Rockstar’s parent company even further.

Strauss Zelnick noted that Netflix has historically built its business mainly through organic growth rather than major corporate acquisitions. The two companies already work together, however, with selected Take-Two games and services distributed through Netflix’s platform.

Take-Two intends to remain independent

Zelnick stressed that Take-Two is proud to operate as an independent company. He described it as the world’s largest publicly traded pure-play video game business and said it expects to generate more than $8 billion in revenue during the current year.

The executive also pointed to the publisher’s ability to produce profits year after year, arguing that it has no need for an outside owner. “If anyone deserves to be an independent company, we do,” he said.

The statement is a direct answer to acquisition speculation. The company behind Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption and NBA 2K is not seeking a buyer under its current leadership and intends to continue following its own strategy.
