Less than a month remains before The Blood of Dawnwalker launches, and Rebel Wolves has revealed another striking detail about just how much freedom players will have when shaping Coen’s story. According to the developers, you can head straight for Brencis, the game’s final opponent, immediately after finishing the prologue, although doing so with such an undeveloped character is likely to be an extraordinarily dangerous proposition.
The Blood of Dawnwalker will be Konrad Tomaszkiewicz’s first game since the The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt director left CD Projekt RED and founded Rebel Wolves in 2022. The studio includes numerous former CD Projekt RED developers, but its first RPG is taking several significant steps away from the formula associated with their previous work. We already knew that players would be able to confront the final enemy unusually early, but Rebel Wolves has now clarified just how early that can happen: Brencis’ castle can be targeted immediately after the prologue.
Rebel Wolves is building the campaign around a clear ultimate objective, defeating Brencis and avenging Coen’s family, without forcing everyone to follow the same predetermined route toward it. The developers explained the concept further in a six-minute video outlining the structure of the RPG. While certain main story missions will still be required, most activities and side quests are optional, effectively becoming individual building blocks that players can use to construct their own version of the adventure.
That does not mean those quests will be irrelevant. Instead, Rebel Wolves wants players to determine how much knowledge, equipment, power, and support they gather while traveling through the Carpathians before confronting the central threat. The studio describes “the valley as a big place open for exploration,” where Coen can seek new knowledge and allies, but players are equally free to ignore those opportunities and head directly for Brencis’ stronghold.
Freedom Also Means Being Allowed to Rush the Final Boss
Brencis will not simply be standing outside waiting for Coen once the open world becomes available, but Rebel Wolves nevertheless treats an immediate assault on his castle as a genuine gameplay option. In other words, the developers are not using an invisible wall or an artificial story restriction to prevent players from attempting something for which they are badly underprepared. There is, however, a very clear warning attached: “defeating him as a newly created Dawnwalker will be a feat worthy of legends.” Being able to reach the final confrontation therefore does not mean that winning it will be remotely easy, and anyone attempting it immediately should expect an extreme challenge.
The idea fits directly into Rebel Wolves’ broader philosophy for The Blood of Dawnwalker. Players will determine how Coen develops, which quests and activities are worth pursuing, which opportunities they are willing to abandon, and which allies they want beside them before tackling the central conflict. We will soon discover how successfully all of these systems work together, as The Blood of Dawnwalker launches on September 3, 2026. If Rebel Wolves delivers on its promises, its debut could immediately establish the Polish studio as one of the most interesting RPG developers in Europe.
