To mark the holiday, GSC Game World is set to release a major update and a DLC next week, so we can enjoy the fireworks.
The Ukrainian developer is preparing for the release of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl 2.0 update, which will include a significant amount of free content for all players. The update will be released on August 20, the same day as the game’s first major DLC, Cost of Hope. The 2.0 update will focus on visual improvements, increased activity in the Zone, expanded customization options and new weapons. In terms of graphics, players can expect enhanced environmental rendering throughout the Zone thanks to more natural lighting, realistic shadows and improved reflections everywhere in the world, including inside buildings and underground areas. GSC has also reportedly reworked the landscapes and vegetation to make the Zone feel more organic and immersive.
The update further refines the A-Life AI system to create more realistic activities and encounters across the entire region. Interesting locations such as campfires and bus stops can now become hotspots of conflict when stalkers and mutants cross paths. Several long-standing fundamental issues have also been resolved. These include enemies shooting or throwing objects through walls, and unexpected overcrowding in certain parts of the Zone. Additionally, the 2.0 update introduces customizable difficulty settings to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, enabling players to adjust the game to suit their preferences, whether they want a more forgiving survival experience or a much tougher challenge. Those looking for a more traditional, hardcore experience can select the Master difficulty level or activate the optional Expedition mode, both of which were introduced in previous updates.
There are three different types of binoculars that stalkers can obtain. Each model uses different technology and offers unique features that enable players to scout the Zone, identify targets and plan their next move. Binoculars can be found at various locations throughout the Zone or purchased from select merchants. Update 2.0 introduces four new firearms: the Arev assault rifle, the GP3A and SKP sniper rifles, and the Fora-230 submachine gun. Players may also discover a unique variant of one of these weapons somewhere in the Zone. The update also includes new optical accessories, such as a 3x magnifying scope for Western Bloc weapons and a red dot sight for Eastern Bloc weapons. Off-axis aiming can now be used beyond thermal night vision devices, giving players greater freedom when customizing their gear.
From now on, fog will appear as both a visual weather effect and a gameplay factor. In foggy conditions, both stalkers and enemies will have reduced vision and hearing. The light rain weather scenario has also been visually overhauled to better match the enhanced environmental rendering in this update. Other new features and improvements include a new statistics page on the PDA where players can track their activities in the Zone and varying bloodsucker and flesh-eater appearances depending on their habitat. There are also further technical fixes and refinements based on community feedback. According to GSC, this update is the result of nearly two years of player feedback, technical development and new ideas, all aimed at making the Zone more dynamic and immersive.
The new update is of course best enjoyed alongside the Cost of Hope DLC. This upcoming expansion delves into the enduring conflict between the Duty and Freedom factions, transporting players to new locales like the Iron Forest, Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the Space Bubble. According to GSC, players can look forward to many hours of new content while experiencing the unique atmosphere of the Zone once again. The Cost of Hope DLC will be included in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Ultimate Edition bundle, but can also be purchased separately for $30 or €30.
