TECH NEWS – One user wasn’t so lucky because it’s not common for a processor to fail so soon after purchase.
Another case has emerged on Reddit in which an X3D processor burned out, but this time the Ryzen 7 7800X3D was only three months old. While running at factory settings, the processor swelled and burned out, damaging the motherboard socket as well. In the r/PCMasterRace community, a user shared the experience of a friend with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D whose metal plate had loosened as the processor swelled, leaving the CPU exposed.

The user had an MSI Pro X870-P WIFI motherboard with 16 GB of DDR5 memory set to an XMP profile. Aside from this, all the settings were at their defaults, meaning that the processor was not overclocked, so the CPU failure cannot be attributed to overclocking either. It was already known that X870 motherboards delivered higher voltages, causing these CPUs to burn out. However, this happened back in 2023, and the issue was resolved by subsequent BIOS updates, which were also carried over to newer X870 motherboards released in 2024.
For this reason, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the current issue. The user was using an MSI A750GL PCIE5 power supply, a decent mid-range unit, so this possibility can be ruled out. This is either a motherboard issue or, as the Reddit user himself put it, a rare case of bad luck in the silicon lottery. Nevertheless, the Reddit user was advised to file an RMA request. However, a replacement currently seems unlikely, especially since the CPU cover was removed, which voids the warranty. If the cover came off due to the CPU swelling and was not removed by the user, however, there’s a better chance of getting the processor replaced.
CPUs don’t usually just break down like this after three months. In fact, a processor can function properly for more than ten years without any issues, so AMD has a real headache on its hands, to put it mildly.
