Is Intel Developing a Cheaper Panther Lake Chip for Budget Handheld PCs?

HANDHELD NEWS – Intel is reportedly expanding its handheld strategy with another Panther Lake chip…

Although the Arc G3 series is Intel’s most powerful system-on-a-chip product family for handheld PCs, this does not mean that the company is focusing exclusively on high-end chips. The company has already launched several SKU series from the Panther Lake lineup. Although these weren’t designed specifically for handheld platforms, Intel is preparing similar versions for portable devices. This has resulted in the development of the Intel Arc G3 and G3 Extreme SoCs, which provide 14-core configurations with integrated graphics solutions based on 10 and 12 Xe3 cores respectively, known as the Arc B370 and Arc B390. These are powerful gaming processors without a discrete GPU, and several handheld manufacturers have already integrated them into their latest models.

However, according to a tweet by Jaykihn, Intel is reportedly preparing another SKU from the Panther Lake series for handheld gaming devices. This isn’t official yet, but based on the user’s information, it appears that Intel is focusing on entry-level handheld PCs. The user claims that Intel is preparing a Panther Lake variant with a “4+0+4+4” configuration: four Performance cores, zero Efficient cores, four LP-E cores and four Xe3 GPU cores. This configuration is similar to those used in Panther Lake processors such as the Core Ultra 5 325/335 and Core Ultra 7 355/365 models. Rather than constantly competing with Strix Point- and Strix Halo-based handhelds, Intel could therefore breathe new life into the entry-level segment with its new SoCs. Given the current state of the market, this is a logical move, as Arc G3/Extreme-based handheld PCs can easily exceed $1,000.

While memory and storage remain the main factors driving up prices, the arrival of a new 8-core SKU could soon make gaming handhelds available for under $1,000 or even under $800.
