Xbox Keeps Its Promise as the August Update Brings Six Useful New Console Features

Microsoft has spent the past several months steadily adding new functionality to Xbox Series X|S, and the latest August update brings another six features to everyone. The changes range from safer cloud-save management and improved Xbox 360 support to a particularly convenient option that lets players jump into supported games through the cloud while an installation or update is still in progress.

Microsoft has been delivering console improvements at a much faster pace throughout this year, an interesting shift after many players previously worried that Xbox’s growing emphasis on its wider ecosystem might leave the console experience behind. The system update that began rolling out on August 12 makes six additions broadly available after most of them had already spent several weeks being tested through the Xbox Insider program.

Cloud Save Recovery, Faster Access to Games, and More Attention for Xbox 360

One of the most practical additions is the ability to restore older cloud saves. If a save becomes corrupted or something else goes wrong, players can browse previously synchronized versions, select an earlier copy, and restore it directly from the console. The feature currently works with Forza Horizon 6 through the saved-data section of Manage game & add-ons, although Microsoft has already confirmed that support for additional titles will be introduced through future updates.

Another useful change means an installation or update no longer necessarily has to stop someone from playing. If a title can be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming as part of the player’s Game Pass membership, the console can now offer a cloud launch while the local version continues installing or waits in the update queue. That makes it possible to start playing immediately rather than sitting through a potentially massive download. The August update also gives players who still spend time with older Xbox generations several welcome improvements.

Xbox 360 titles now have dedicated Game Hubs on their game cards, providing a single place to check achievement progress, captures, and other useful information. Microsoft has also improved the symbols showing cloud-save synchronization status and added more detailed achievement popups to Xbox 360 achievement lists. Even Windows Phone games have received some unexpected attention, as their achievements will now appear in each player’s achievement history.

The final major additions focus on making libraries easier to manage. Xbox wishlists can now contain as many as 1,000 released and upcoming games, with titles also being addable directly from their game cards. The Manage Installation screen now displays subscription badges for base games and add-ons when access comes through a service such as Game Pass, making it easier to tell which content depends on an active subscription. The update also fixes several problems, including a crash that could occur while scrolling through pages in My games & apps, alongside broader stability and performance improvements.
