Will Sony Still Retain the Majority of Its Disc Manufacturing Capacity in 2028?

It appears that Sony will either immediately phase out disc production or delay the end of PlayStation Blu-ray discs for a short time.

PlayStation will stop producing physical discs in 2028, a decision that has upset fans. Starting in 2028, the gaming giant will no longer produce discs for new games, though reports indicate that it will retain 90% of its production capacity to support discs for existing games. Even after 2028, Sony will retain a significant portion of its PlayStation disc production capacity. According to Game, 90% of the production capacity for PlayStation 5 discs will remain at Sony’s factory even after the phase-out of physical media.

Previous reports had suggested that this percentage would drop to 10% after physical disc production ends. However, Sony DADC (Digital Audio Disc Corporation—the team formerly behind SecuROM and later Denuvo, which first became independent and was then acquired by Irdeto, separating from Sony) has clarified that the 10% figure indicates the extent of the reduction, not the final result. Thus, Sony will continue to have sufficient capacity to support discs for older titles. Whether this will remain the case in 2029 and beyond remains to be seen, but physical games will not disappear immediately in 2028.

As we mentioned earlier, this information applies to older titles since PlayStation has indicated that games released in 2028 will no longer be available in physical format. That said, Marvel’s Venom from Insomniac Games (mentioned in today’s news) and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet from Naughty Dog (still seemingly unwilling to break away from the The Last of Us franchise) might be in luck.

Sony may not have put an end to the matter just yet, so despite the criticism seen on social media, the company’s plans may have shifted somewhat.
